Needham and NEF Honor Retiring Superintendent Stephen Theall

On May 25, 2006, the Needham Education Foundation held a retirement benefit in honor of Stephen J. Theall. Donors contributed $38,000, or one thousand dollars for each year of Steve’s career in public education. The money raised will create an NEF grant in perpetuity in Steve’s name.

The gala at Olin College included performances by the Needham Public Schools Staff Choral Ensemble, Directed by Millie Beane, and the Needham Elementary School Honors Chorus, Directed by Heather Tryon. The Needham Town Orchestra directed by Whitney Dorne and the Needham High School String Quartet provided entertainment during the cocktail hour. Massachusetts House of Representatives Majority Whip Lida Harkins read a proclamation from the legislature.

Among the speakers were two of Steve’s daughters Sarah Theall and Carly Carty, Selectman Jim Healy and School Committee Chairwoman Marianne Cooley. Bruce Johnstone was honored for his role in the NEF when it started. Steve received a Golf Club pen set and a book of tribute letters from colleagues and public officials—ranging from Senator Edward Kennedy to a young man he mentors.
