Newman "Zest Fest" Builds Community, One Song At a Time

Nick Page and his “Zest Fest” visited Newman Elementary School in January 2006 for three days of school wide singing and community building.

The grant committee wrote:

“Our goal of making the kids feel that they are of one community, regardless of the size of the school, or everyone’s ethnic/cultural background, was clearly meet. … Everyone was excited, and we even had teary-eyed parents come up to us and thank us for bringing this to the kids. ...

"The kids clearly enjoyed being part of the process, and it was great to see a collection of students of different ages and ethnicities all working on presenting their languages to the school. ...

"We heard kids singing to each other in the hallways, we saw kids working on their "Zest" move (energetic), while others worked on their "blah" move (drooping eyelids, tongue hanging, etc.)... Everyone was excited."

A fourth-grade teacher wrote:

“By focusing on language and peace, Nick Page created a wonderful feeling of belonging to our world. Diversity though language and song. I was humming all weekend!”

A fifth-grade teacher wrote:

“Fantastic!! I wish that music was like this all of the time. My students had a lot of fun and learned a lot. Even I had a lot fun. Please, more!!”

Nick Page quote of the week:

"You don't have to like someone to be their friend. You just have to listen."
