2007-08 Large Grant awards

Lesley @ Hillside Collaborative Internship Program
Submitted by Michael Kascak, Principal, Hillside Elementary School
Funding: $15,000
This is a grant awarded for a second year of funding for a collaborative internship program in partnership with Lesley University which began this past September. The program is designed to bring in graduate students from Lesley University’s Accelerated Teacher Certification program to the Hillside School for a full year classroom experience, while providing professional development opportunities to the Hillside teachers. The program has the potential to bring a diverse group of teachers to the school system, and to possibly expand to other schools in the district. The request for the second year of funding is to increase the number of interns that Hillside is able to get to bring them up to full capacity by year 3, making the program self-sustainable.

Art for All and All for Art - Public Art for Needham High School
Submitted by Karen Price and Linda Burke, NHS art teacher
Funding: $15,000
This is a grant awarded for a second year of funding to continue the multi-year initiative to design, create and install a public art display in the new lobby of the high school. The funds requested would be for Phase IV of the project, which includes the actual fabrication and installation of the pieces with artist-in-residence Joy Wulke, as well as curriculum work for the Public Art course. The “Art for All” project has received funding from the NEF, the NHS PTC, and 2 years funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. There is also a fundraising subcommittee that has and will continue to raise funds through events and community appeals.

Advisory Program for Pollard Middle School Students
Submitted by Glenn Brand, Pollard Principal
Funding: $15,000
This is a grant awarded for funding to develop and implement an advisory program at the middle school where teachers would regularly meet with small groups of students, addressing the district objective to “ensure that all students have a meaningful connection to an adult in the school system”. The hope is to roll the program out in the 2008-2009 school year, coinciding with the 20 minute extension of the school day. An advisory committee has been formed to look at successful models and develop the structure. They are working with Rachel Poliner, who has served as the social/emotional learning consultant to the district over the last six years. The funds would be used to train the middle school teachers with the skills necessary to act as a mentor to the students. The application indicates that they will be requesting a second year of funding to support the initial training, and then is expected to be self-sustainable with a Train the Trainer model to do additional teacher training.
