Third Grade Math
Enrichment Through Literacy

| To support differentiated math
instruction in the third grade and to help reinforce math vocabulary, a
broad variety of math reading materials will be purchased for each
third grade classroom. With these math materials, teachers will have an
alternative method to help students explore and think about math
subjects. Materials will be used during morning work, in math centers,
in small groups and will be available for students to take home. |
“Drum Up
Character” Program

| This grant will pay for the
purchase of Djembe drums to be used by Hillside school in drumming
circles. The Hillside Creative Arts Committee and the PTC will fund 3
teacher trainings by Tom Foote, celebrated drummer and drumming
instructor. Drumming circles will be integrated into classroom morning
meetings and school assemblies with the goal of supporting the Hillside
School’s character education. |
Mark
Rothstein’s World of Jump Roping

| The World of Rope Jumping is
an exhibition that stresses the messages of living a fit lifestyle,
trying your best, and making positive choices. This interactive,
motivational program will be presented to the entire Mitchell School in
two assemblies followed by grade level student workshops. Additionally,
the grant will allow for the purchase of jump ropes to be used at
recess so that students may translate what they learn into action. |

| Foodplay is a comprehensive
nutrition and health program for elementary schools that helps educate
and empower children to take charge of growing up healthy and fit.
Addressing the major nutrition, fitness and self-esteem concerns of
today’s children, Foodplay provides kids with the practical
tools they need to improve their eating and exercise habits. The
program reaches out to teachers, cafeteria staff and parents through
their printed support materials. Two assemblies will be presented so
that the entire Mitchell school will be able to partake of the program. |

| Foodplay will be presented to
the entire Newman student population. Newman staff and parents will be
invited to attend as well. Follow up materials will be reproduced for
students, teachers, parents, health, and food service staff to support
ongoing education and reinforcement. |
Recording Musical
Performance For Increased Skill Learning

| This grant allows for the purchase of high
quality wall-mount speakers, an amplifier, and portable CD recorder for
the band/orchestra room and will enable all music students at Pollard
to listen to music and to record group performances. The students will
be able to hear and analyze performances in a high quality format, have
the ability to change tempo and pitch of recordings, have rehearsals
recorded on a daily basis, and have all performances recorded with high
quality.

Jazz Residency at
Pollard

| John Baboian, an accomplished
local jazz guitarist, performer, composer and educator, will serve as
an artist in residence during one week in Fall 2007. He will attend
band, orchestra and choral classes for four days working with students
on jazz education, technique and performance. This will culminate in a
school assembly and evening performance for students’
families and the community. |
Needham High School
Stress Reduction Committee Coordinator

| The High School has formally
embarked on its examination of academic-based student stress through a
representative Stress Reduction Committee (SRC), with the charge to
explore, analyze, and make recommendations for action to address
academic-based stress at Needham High. This grant will fund a
coordinator position to help organize and run the SRC meetings, do
research on stress issues, collect data and tend to any other related
tasks that will enable the committee’s work to proceed. |
Student Art Archives

| This grant will fund the
purchase of the digital photography equipment and other materials
required to enable the Fine and Performing Arts Department to begin
recording student work digitally. This will enable the department to
create an archive of student work to be used as reference material in
the future; it will allow students to create a CD portfolio that will
travel with them as they move through the art program; and it will
enable students to learn and manipulate graphic programs to present
their work in a serious and professional format. |
