2004-05 Large Grant awards

1. "Expanding the Dialogue"
Debbie Watters, Pollard Middle School
Year One Funding: $15,000
This is a collaborative project between the Pollard Middle School, the Needham Human Rights Committee, and the Needham Clergy Association.

The project vision is to implement a systematic and comprehensive way to educate students system wide to identify, talk about and devise action plans around issues of bias, stereotypes, racism and other oppressions. It encompasses all aspects of the Needham community that affect a child's development, including sports organizations, religious institutions, parent education as well as the school community.

This NEF Large Grant would put into motion, beginning at the middle school level, the training, dialog and climate that facilitate discussion, leadership and confidence among students, teachers, parents, and community leaders in facing and challenging intolerance when it happens. Using proven programs and methods, such as the Anti-Defamation League's World of Difference Program and Facing History, this project will build upon, complement, and support other efforts in the schools and the community. The vision is to expand to include elementary curriculum in future year(s).

2. Mitchell School Outdoor Learning Center: A Permanent, Multipurpose Outdoor Learning Classroom
Wendy Perlman, Mitchell Elementary School
Funding: $11,115
The Mitchell School Outdoor Learning Center Committee will transform the school's existing unused, courtyard into a vibrant, multipurpose outdoor learning center. The proposal seeks funding from the NEF for the purchase of materials to build a handicapped accessible lecture/performance space and bench seating for about fifty students, in an amphitheater style. The goal is to enrich and expand the Mitchell School curriculum for all students for years to come. The amphitheater is an integral and critical feature of the learning center because it will enable the courtyard to truly function as the creative outdoor classroom it is intended to be.
