2004/2005 NEF Autumn Grant Awards

1. Learning Through Drama in the 2nd Grade Classroom

Second grade Science and Social Studies curriculum will be enhanced through educational creative drama, taught by certified drama teacher Shelia Ponte. More than 60 hours of time will be budgeted for creating lesson plans with teachers and conducting student drama workshops. Students will have the opportunity to assume the "role" of the subject matter, offering a more direct and personal learning experience.
2. Creating a Safe Sensory Environment
Broadmeadow

Purchase of educational items and materials to be used in the regular education setting to enhance safe sensory environments in Broadmeadow classrooms.The sensory needs of individual students will be addressed by providing sensory tools, software and materials and will support students with sensory modulation techniques. These tools and techniques will help students achieve social/emotional competency goals such as self-management skills and identifying strategies for coping with strong emotions.
3. Writing Workshop with Author Brian Lies
Eliot

Children's author and illustrator Brian Lies will share his knowledge and experiences about the writing process, and conduct workshops over a two-week period with fourth and fifth grade students in creative writing.
4. Beyond Sticks and Stones: Creating a Comprehensive Safety Zone for Kids

Implementation of a comprehensive program that includes surveys, materials, books, and presentations to provide resources and strategies to deal with peer harassment issues including teasing and bullying, and safety issues on the Internet, with students, teachers and parents.
5. Display Panels
Eliot

Unique and creative display panels will be built by an Eliot teacher to display artwork and other forms of work created by Eliot students for enjoyment by the entire Eliot community. Work will be completed in time for the spring art show.
6. The Joy of Creating: A Poet in Residence Program
Mitchell

Children's author and poet Lyn Littlefield Hoopes will conduct a series of 38 90-minute long workshops on exploring and enhancing the creative process and poetry writing for students in grades 2 - 5
7. Newman Goes Global
Newman

School-wide project that aims to heighten children's awareness and understanding regarding the variety of nations and customs of people around the world. Curriculum connections will include morning meeting, art, music and language. Grant will fund the purchase of map kits and books for all 31 classrooms, and Eyewitness travel guidebooks for each grade level. Each month will have a different "focus" nation, culminating in a World's Fair in the spring.
8. The Warhol Self-Portrait Project

Fifth grade students will create unique self-portraits in the style of pop culture icon Andy Warhol, utilizing digital photography technology, while studying color theory, art appreciation and art history. Grant will fund the purchase of a digital camera, ink-jet printer, software and art supplies.
9. Table Tennis
Pollard
$3,500
Purchase of 4 tables, 25 racquets and balls to introduce table tennis as an after-school activity to middle school students. Top ranked New England table tennis player Qiumars Hedaytian will introduce table tennis in a demonstration to students, as well as coach students after school.
10. Literacy Bridge Start-Up: Grade 6 English/Language Arts
Pollard

Sixth grade language arts teachers will be trained and provided materials on Readers and Writers Workshop in an effort to facilitate the transition of incoming readers and writers to middle school. Project includes purchase of a professional library, introductory workshop, visits to fifth grade classrooms, and a day of evaluation and planning.
11. Technology in the Classroom
Pollard

Purchase of an LCD projector and desktop computer for the Social Studies department. The projector will provide advanced technology that will be used to present student created projects, teacher generated projects, and other Internet research materials by the entire Social Studies department.
12. Mediators Refresher Course
High School
$950
Twenty student mediators at the High School who were trained at the Pollard Middle School in peer mediation techniques will attend a refresher course to improve their listening skills and develop skills necessary to help their high school aged peers resolve conflicts in a peaceful and productive manner.
13. To See, To Record, To Document and To Reflect - Needham High School Renovation Digital Photography Project
High School
$3,500
A four-year project will take place to introduce digital photography to the art curriculum and utilize digital photography resources to document the upcoming renovation construction project and its effects on students, staff and the community. Funding is for the start-up equipment including digital cameras, scanner, computer, ink-jet printer and supplies.
