2002-2003 Annual Grants for Needham Schools

The Needham Education Foundation will make 24 annual grant awards for a total of $75,148 in the 2002-2003 academic year. This is in addition to the $15,000 awarded to the NEF 2002 Large Grant recipient.

American Art Quest at Newman

Lecture series for 5th graders with slide shows and discussions to help students integrate art history and appreciation into their American History social studies curriculum.

Presentations to students of slides of art work to stimulate discussion and critical thinking. Artwork is chosen to coordinate with each grade’s social studies curriculum.
Multimedia on the Move

The Roar of the Bulldozer

Project involving an artist-in-residence to work with all grade levels on music, movement, dance and drama activities integrated with curriculum, and related to the school’s move to a temporary setting during school construction.
5. Asian Occasion: Folk Tales, Myths and Bamboo Music

Performances at each elementary school by master storyteller, involving music, audience participation. Stories will be from several Asian cultures and enhance the social studies themes from several grade levels.

Residency from the Mind Body Institute to train teachers how to use yoga with their students, as a strategy to manage stress, improve focus and improve health, academic and athletic performance.

In-service training by Barry Lane to further develop teachers’ skills to teach writing to their students. Workshops for each grade level are targeted at the appropriate developmental stage of writing.

Connections in Art

Purchase of kits for art teachers to use with children at each grade level to coordinate with curriculum frameworks in many areas, including language arts, social studies, mathematics, and science.
Wyckoff Sculpture Science Kits

Development of science activity kits to teach children different aspects of physical science (i.e. simple machines, energy, balance, gravity, and light). All of these science elements are integrated into the Wyckoff Sculpture at the new Broadmeadow School.

Development and organization of teaching materials and resources to enhance the teaching of the social studies curriculum in all grades by adding materials that provide a multicultural perspective.
